The Start of Your Barista Journey
In this Basic Barista Course, you will learn what defines a truly great espresso and how to prepare it confidently with different coffees. We begin by taking you on a journey along the coffee value chain to understand how origin, botany, and processing influence flavour. With this foundation, we show you what makes an excellent espresso and how to extract it consistently with various beans. In addition to the essential theory—extraction curves, grind size, brew ratios, and machine fundamentals—there is plenty of hands-on practice. You will dial in grinders and recipes, experiment with grind settings, and develop an intuition for making your home espresso taste like it does in your favourite café. And since an outstanding espresso deserves the perfect milk foam, we teach you how to steam milk properly and pour simple latte art patterns into your cappuccino or flat white.
Of course, tasting is an essential part of the experience: we cup different filter coffees, sample a range of espressos, and finish with your first perfectly crafted cappuccino. This barista course sets you up for the next step in your coffee journey.
For practice, we use our Zebra (100% Brazil Arabica) as a demanding training espresso, alongside a rotating selection of filter coffees. If preferred, our decaf Sloth is available as an alternative.

Equipment
We work with heat-exchange portafilter machines such as the Bezzera Magica, Rocket Giotto, and Rocket Mozzafiato.
You are welcome to bring your own machine (please check with us beforehand).
Our machines are paired with the Eureka Mignon Specialità grinder. For milk beverages, we provide both oat and cow’s milk.
Prerequisites
No prior knowledge required—just a strong thirst for coffee.
